Fire Prevention Week

October 8-14, 2023 is Fire Prevention Week.

This year's theme is 'Cooking Safety Starts with You'. Did you know that the majority of house fires begin in the kitchen? Some tips to stay safe:

  • Watch what you heat. Set a timer to remind yourself that you're cooking.
  • Keep flammable items like towels and oven mitts away from heating elements.
  • Turn pot handles to the back so they don't catch on anything going by. Keep a lid handy to drop over the pot if the contents catch on fire.
  • Keep a kid and pet-free zone 1m away from the stove and anywhere hot food or beverages are being prepared.
